Breeding and selling horses with rollers

Maquinchao

We are Yeguada Rodríguez, a family business focused on horse breeding for more than 10 years. Since 2008 we have been WORKING every day to preserve one of the most special equines IN THE WORLD: horses with rollers.

This TYPE of horses was DISCOVERED in the Somuncurá Plateau in the Río Negro province. Maquinchao is located in the south-central province of Río Negro, Patagonia Argentina where summers are hot, dry and mostly clear with temperatures reaching 32 °; Winters are very cold with minimum temperatures that can reach -20. The landscape, with infinite horizons, makes its sunsets and sunrises majestic, its nights allow to see skies full of stars and beautiful moons. The wind often accompanies us but as we usually say here, it carries away bad energies.

Our objective is to preserve the breed, which has been endangered on numerous occasions, reaching the point of being almost extinct due to CLIMATE factors such as droughts, volcano eruptions and crosses with other breeds.

For us, caring for these horses is essential so that more people can enjoy their many benefits. The presence of curlers in their fur make them one of the most beautiful breeds in the world, they are tame, rustic and hypoallergenic animals. Due to their qualities, they are ideal for equine therapy, horse riding for children or simply enjoying their company.

Characteristics of Horses with Rollers

The qualities of this particular breed of horse are as numerous as they are positive. They stand out for having a gentle character, being docile by nature, meek, robust, curious and intelligent. His appearance is refined and his ability to learn is amazing. They are patient and kind, especially with children, fearful people and those with different abilities.

Males reach their final size at 6 or 7 years of age and their height is between 1.42 and 1.50 meters. In addition, they are hypoallergenic.

Undoubtedly, its distinctive mark is its elegant curly coat. During the winter months, she covers her body with beautiful curlers that are very soft to the touch. This fur has been evaluated and it has been found that it has similarities to mohair fur, and it can be spun.

How did these horses get to Patagonia?

There are several hypotheses that try to explain the appearance of this breed in Patagonia. Investigating more about its origin with ancient settlers, bibliography and on the WEB, we discovered different versions and we want to share them with you:

One of the hypotheses that takes more force dates from 1536, when Don Pedro de Mendoza, governor of the Spanish colony, introduced 100 working and war horses from Cádiz to the territory. Years later, after the flight of the Spanish, the horses were abandoned and began to reproduce by the thousands, populating much of Argentina. When they returned to the area, years later, they observed that the horses in some sectors had developed the characteristic curly hair.

Another relevant theory refers to an expedition carried out by Bishop Trejo, who entered equines through southern Argentina. It is also believed that the Templars when bringing the Holy Grail to the Somuncurá Plateau did so by riding these horses.

There is a version that mentions that these horses came from the north, crossing the Bering Strait and that they were originally from the Bashkiria region, Russia.

What is true and we can affirm about this great breed is that they remained alive and in herds in the inhospitable, hostile and sparsely populated lands of the Somuncurá Plateau for many years.

We would like to show you the video filmed by Dr. Mitch Wilkinson on his visit to our home.

In 2013, we met Ms. Angie Gaines, a member of the American Bashkir Curly Registry Association in the United States. Through her we met Dr. Mitch Wilkinson, from the “International Curly House Organization”. During the year 2019, we received his pleasant visit, he came to meet our horses to take blood and hair samples, which were taken to the University of Texas to be studied by doctors Gus Cothran and Rytis Juries. Currently, they are conducting research on them.
